Building the New Space Age: Reflections from a technology strategy guy and his team

Sat, 15 May, 2021 17:00 - 18:00
Time Zone: Europe/London
Local Time: Sat, 15 May, 2021 17:00 - 18:00

Dr Marc Ventresca will introduce recent developments in the Oxford Space Initiative (OSI), including the research partnerships with European Space Agency and other firms and agencies in the UK space ecosystem investigating business innovation.

How are legacy government space agencies adapting to these emerging, commercial business models? How does the current generation of venture capital-funded start ups differ from the now familiar models of SpaceX and other pioneers? What are the issues driving both ventures and funding, such as the challenges of sorting space debris, the potential for cyber challenges in the complex digital communications that enable much of today’s space activity, and the question of why ‘space’ is the new frontier for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

Marc is the lead researcher and principal investigator of the initiative, part of a wider social sciences-based Oxford Space Observatory (OXSO) to explore the growth of space commerce and related challenges of space governance with colleagues in the Department of Politics and Internal Relations, in the Smith School and with researchers in robotics, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and photonics.

He will be joined by several alumni working on these issues, who contribute to this work and to the new Trinity Term MBA elective course ‘SmartSpace: Building the Future’. Marc will talk about the research and teaching and also highlight to linkages of his work with wider University partners and, within the School, with the Entrepreneurship Centre and executive education colleagues.
