Prosperity - Better business makes the greater good
Colin Mayer, Will Hutton, OBA London Chapter

Tue, 20 Nov, 2018 18:30 - 21:00

The OBA London Chapter in partnership with the British Academy Future of Corporation series are delighted to invite you to Prosperity – Better business makes the great good on 20 November, 6.30pm at the British Academy. This fireside chat between Will Hutton, (Principal of Hertford College and Chair of the Big Innovation Centre Steering Group) and Colin Mayer (Professor of Finance and former Dean of Saïd Business School) will challenge the fundamentals of business thinking.

In his new book, Prosperity, Colin Mayer discusses that the restraint of a corporation to a single narrow objective of shareholder profit has had wide-ranging and damaging consequences; economic, environmental, political, and social. Join this pair of eminent economists as they discuss a new positive agenda - that large corporations are now in a unique and powerful position to promote economic and social wellbeing in its fullest sense, for customers, for future generations, as well as for shareholders. The evening will be as much a discussion of how to create and run successful businesses as an insight into the policymaking needed to fix the regulatory frameworks to achieve this goal.

Peter Moores Professor of Management Studies and former Dean of the Saïd Business School in Oxford, Colin Mayer is a leading figure in the global discussion about the purpose and role of the corporation. Colin is an expert on all aspects of corporate finance, governance and taxation, the regulation of financial institutions and the role of the corporation in contemporary society. He teaches on the MBA, the Masters in Financial Economics and on the Masters in Law and Finance.  n 1994, Colin became the first professor at Saïd Business School, and was appointed the Peter Moores Dean of the Business School between 2006 and 2011. Colin studied as an undergraduate at Oriel College, Oxford, and received his DPhil from Oxford University in 1981. Colin researches in the fields of corporate finance, governance, regulation, taxation and the role of the corporation in contemporary society.

In Prosperity, Colin  presents a radical and carefully considered agenda for corporations themselves, and for the regulatory frameworks that will enable them to do this. Drawing together insights from business, law, and economics, science, philosophy, and history, he shows how the corporation can realize its full potential to contribute to the economic and social wellbeing of the many, not just the few.

Will Hutton is a political economist, author and columnist with a career that spans investment banking, BBC radio and TV, newspapers, consultancy, leading think tanks and heading up government commissions. After six years in the City, he launched his career in journalism as economics editor for the BBC’s Newsnight and later for The Guardian. He went on to become editor of The Observer in 1996, for which he still writes a regular column. From 2000 until 2008 he was CEO of The Work Foundation, stepping down to work as its part time non-executive vice chair. He co-founded the Big Innovation Centre in 2011, which has become one of Britain’s leading innovation think-tanks, soon before joining as Principal of Hertford College. He has made numerous TV documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4.  His latest book, written in conjunction with Lord Andrew Adonis, ‘Saving Britain: How We Can Prosper in a New European Future’ was released in June 2018.
